Jiří Jirmal

A successful interpreter, composer and internationally acclaimed pedagogue, author of the most popular book of guitar lessons and a number of other musical and professional publications (such as "The Basics of Guitar Techniques"), which have played a large part in the tremendous international success of his students. Publications of Professor Jirmal are published by prestigious publishers Henry Lemoine (Paris) and Baerenreiter (Prague).

Jiří Jirmal was born in Prague in 1925. He played guitar since he was young, jazz music especially.

He is a graduate of the Prague Conservatory in the guitar class of professor Štěpán Urban, professor of the Prague Conservatory (1954-1985) and a guest professor of High School of Music in Saarbrücken, Germany (1985-1995).

Known also as a long-time chairman of the Czechoslovak Guitar Competition, a member of many juries of foreign competitions, among others the most prestigious world guitar competition "Radio France - Paris". Even though this competition has always been marked by the extraordinary competition of the most talented young guitar players from all over the world, over the course of 20 years, the incredible number of 11 students of Professor Jirmal have made it to the final, of which 3 won the 1st prize! His pupil Vladimír Mikulka was the 1st Czech finalist of the Paris competition. Professor Jirmal helped significantly to promote Czech guitar pedagogy to a world level.

As a result of his exceptional pedagogical activities, the term "Czech Guitar School" began to be used throughout the world.

In 1999, the publication ,,CESTY ČESKÉ KYTARY“ (JOURNEYS OF CZECH GUITAR) was published. This is a book of conversations that Professor Jirmal led with his student Stanislav Barek.

A year later, the Life of an Artist Foundation, in cooperation with Intergram and the City of Prague, awarded him an award for years of artistic activity.

In 2016, the Czech Music Council awarded Jiří Jirmal an honorary award for his lifelong artistic and pedagogical activities.

Jiří Jirmal publishes his 7th CD under the title "HIS MASTERS GUITAR", where he recorded and concentrated his selected works in the latest contemporary interpretation and adaptations. His marriage of jazz and classical music is typical for all his compositions.

On the occasion of his 80th birthday,the then president Václav Klaus held a gala concert at the Prague Castle.

The well-known renowned European music publisher Henry Lemoine in Paris has successfully released a wide range of guitar compositions by Jiří Jirmal, among which the legendary "Baden Jazz Suite" and "Swinging Guitar" are among the most famous. One English musical critic wrote about it:
